Asymmetry of the pelvis (oblique pelvis) or rotation of the pelvis can be another consequence of misalignment of the Atlas. As seen earlier, when the spinal column is subjected to asymmetrical traction forces by the musculature, the position of the pelvis can be markedly affected, giving the appearance of one leg being shorter than the other (lower limb dysmetria) by as much as a few centimetres. A simple way of checking whether the pelvis is tilted is to carefully observe it in front of a mirror, or to pay attention to the following points: if there is obliquity of the pelvis, when the person stands for a long time in the same position there is a tendency to bend the knee of the apparently longer leg in order to take the weight off the other leg. After correction of the position of the Atlas, many people report that they lose this habit and are more stable.
A tilted (asymmetrical) pelvis improves after correction of the misalignment of the Atlas with the ATLANTOtec® method, often immediately after the treatment or gradually as the skeletal structure rebalances itself.
When the pelvis is no longer tilted, the legs appear to be the same length again. In some cases, other specific therapies must be carried out in order for the pelvis to rebalance itself completely. Until now, a tilted pelvis (oblique pelvis) and the consequent functional short leg were often compensated for with built-up orthopaedic insoles, or with manipulative techniques which were unfortunately only temporarily effective. More functional, and becoming more widespread, are proprioceptive insoles used in isolation. The rare cases in which the legs are actually of different lengths (anatomical short leg) owing to congenital defects, or as a consequence of a fracture, require attention and treatment from orthopaedic specialists.
